Kivu Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo SOPACDI is an organization of 3600 small scale farmers from the Kivu region in the East of the DR Congo. The membership is diverse, with farmers from multiple ethnicities and language families uniting under the cooperative's banner in order to benefit from the opportunities of specilaty coffee. Benefitting from moderate to high altitudes and extensive support from international development groups this cooperative has recently managed to produce exportable crops of top quality specialty washed coffee. This is in large part due to the opening of their new washing station, the first of its kind built in the DR Congo since the 1960s, in October of 2011.
The coffee features a distinct cedar, maple syrup and toffee-like aroma and is typically available as a fresh offering in the first half of the calendar year.
