Colombia Magdalena Dark

This is a new wet-processed coffee comprised of Caturra and Castillo varieties and produced by several hundred farmers from the Magdalena department of Northern Colombia.

These farmers live in an extremely remote region with poor infrastructure and very little government support. They have recently moved to Fairtrade and Organic certification which has increased the value of their coffee to the market and as a result has had a very positive impact on the lives of the producers.

These producers converted from rustic to organic production in 2015. 2017 was the first year for major exports of organic coffee from the area, bringing in an additional $1500 to $2000 of new income per family.

The farmers of this coffee are primarily Arhuaco, an indigenous people who place environmental protection as a very high priority. Their worldview places the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains as the centre of the world. They believe that the world’s well-being depends on the protection of their mountains.
